Description

Application Requirements

  1. Applicant must be a Licensed Registered Nurse.
  2. Applicant must be a current member of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) with evidence of continuous membership (no lapse exceeding 60 days and no more than 1 lapse in membership during this 5-year period, regardless of the length of the lapse) and active participation in the Association over the past five (5) years. HPNA will be taking into consideration that lapses in membership from February 1, 2020 through March 31, 2023 may have been exacerbated by pandemic. Lapses in membership during this time period will be given special consideration.  HPNA Membership must be maintained to keep Fellow status. Requirement of 5 years of HPNA membership by December 31st in the year of application.
  3. Current HPNA Board members at time of application are not eligible.
  4. Applicant must provide evidence of leadership with sustained professional contributions over the course of their career in the field of palliative nursing.
  5. Applicant must show a significant commitment to the advancement of the art and science in the field of palliative nursing; along with demonstrating the impact of their unique work on the field. Please note: due to the COVID-19 pandemic, HPNA will be taking into consideration that specific areas of intended work during the year of 2020 and 2021 may have been impacted by cancellations of affected events. If you were invited or selected to lead events or presentations/sessions that were canceled due to the pandemic, and the event normally would have earned you credit points, please attach documentation of your acceptance or invitation to your application file.  Enter the information into the application in the appropriate sections to include those credit points and indicate the cancellation of the event. 
  6. Applicant must provide two (2) letters of recommendation from professional peers; letters must be received by the deadline. (At least one letter of recommendation must be authored by an HPNA member). Professional peers should be chosen who know the applicant’s work well enough to verify and provide examples re. the applicant’s strengths, contributions, and impact on the field of palliative nursing. Those writing the letters of recommendation should state how long they have known the applicant, and in what capacity.
  7. Applicant must provide a CV (Curriculum Vitae) or Resume with the application; the CV or Resume content should match and/or substantiate the information contained in the application. CV/ Resume should have a section near the top that includes all HPNA/HPCC/HPNF involvement. 
  8. An application fee of $250 is required.  If applicant is not accepted for induction, the fee will remain as a credit towards a future application. Please call 412.787.9301 option 1 to pay. 
  9. Accrual of a minimum of 100 points, including a minimum of 25 points in Section 1, as defined on the HPNA Fellows application is necessary for consideration. The remaining 75 points outside of Section 1 will be accrued through Sections II-IV. The CV/Resume, The Statement of Impact and The Statement of Future Contributions must support the applicant's trajectory of progressive leadership activities within palliative care.
  10. Applicants are encouraged to include ALL professional activities that highlight their contributions and impact on the field (for example, provide a complete presentation of HPNA activities for section one, not just those that add up to 25 points).  Please provide activities in reverse chronological order in each section (most recent activities listed first).
  11. Professional activities can be submitted for one category only.  Duplication of the same activity in different point sections of the application will not be counted.
  12. Completed applications will be reviewed for contributions and impact on the field; quantitative score of 100 or greater does not guarantee Fellow designation.
  13. Application and all required components must be RECEIVED in the National Office no later than 11:59 PM EST on JULY 31, 2024.  Only completed applications received by the deadline will be considered.
